Grown in the Breede River Valley in the heart of South Africa's Western Cape, the grapes are picked from between two mountain ranges, where they enjoy cooling breezes. The result is a deliciously fruity style, with ripe pear and green apple on the nose followed by citrus fruit and white peach on the palate.
Western Cape is a geographical unit that encompasses most of South Africa’s vineyards. The Western Cape winelands’ sub-regions include Stellenbosch, Constantia, Robertson, Paarl, Walker Bay, Olifants River and Klein Karroo.
The variety of sub-regions in Western Cape is reflected in the diversity of grape varietals grown and styles of wine produced however the emphasis is on classic, international varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc with smaller amounts of Verdelho, Malbec, Sangiovese, Syrah, Grenache, Grenache Blanc and Viognier in the mix.
Although it is most famously produced in Italy, this popular grape is now grown globally. Although usually light and aromatic in style, wines made using Pinot Grigio will vary depending on the region they are from; for example those from Oregon have pear and apple aromas but the Italian equivalent will be lighter and more crisp. A good wine on its own, its gentle flavours of lemon and pear match seafood, white meats, and spicy Asian cuisine.
