This pretty Alpine region of Italy revolves around the production of bread and wine and the belief that both are key to physical and emotional nourishment. Situated in the very north east of the country, bordering Veneto and Lombardy, and with Alto Adige to its north, Trentino sits at high altitude and has an overall cool climate affected by the Alps and Mediterranean.
Trentino is similar to Aldo Adige in that it is has DOC status and its viticulture has clear Austrian and German influences due to its geopolitical history. An interesting variety of red and white grapes are grown within the Trentino DOC including Schiava, Teroldego, Lagrein, Marzemino, Müller-Thurgau, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir and Carmenere.
In terms of white wine, Trentino’s Müller-Thurgau is of particular note and when it comes to red, Marzemino is the area’s highlight.
Although it is most famously produced in Italy, this popular grape is now grown globally. Although usually light and aromatic in style, wines made using Pinot Grigio will vary depending on the region they are from; for example those from Oregon have pear and apple aromas but the Italian equivalent will be lighter and more crisp. A good wine on its own, its gentle flavours of lemon and pear match seafood, white meats, and spicy Asian cuisine.
