Tuscany’s hilly landscape and coastline on the West provides different microclimates that lend themselves to the creation of some of the finest red wines in the world. The area has winemaking history that predates Roman times but really made a name for itself with its Super Tuscan red wines during the 1980s. Tuscany has over 20 DOC zones and approximately 12 DOCG. These classifications denote quality wine from a specified area and are similar to the French Appelation Controlée.
Sangiovese is Tuscany’s principal grape and the vast majority of the regions’ famous wines such as Chianti, Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano embody the finest traits of this red variety.
Locally grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Canaiolo and Ciliegiolo and often blended with Sangiovese to make Tuscany’s infamous red wines, and the region's most highly-regarded white wines include Vernaccia di San Gimignano and Vermentino.
The Sangiovese grape originated in Italy and was already well-known by the 16th century. To this day, young Sangiovese grapes offer fresh fruity flavours, which can include notes of strawberries and spice, then once aged in barrels Sangiovese wine can take on rich oaky flavours.
