“Great as an aperitif - and ideal with melon and Parma ham.” Giles Kime, The Sunday Telegraph, 25 July 2010

Veneto is Italy’s most varied wine region, with a wealth of red, white and sparkling wines crafted from vineyards that span the plains of the Po Valley and the heights of the Alps’ southern reaches above Verona. It was also the sight of Italy’s first school of vine-growing and oenology set up in 1885.

Within Veneto there are around 20 regions that have a Denominazione di OrigineControllata (DOC) classification. This is Italy’s equivalent to the French Appelation Controlée and denotes quality wine from a specified region.

Although there’s many permitted grape varieties in Veneto, Garganega is the most prevalent white, used for Soave and a blend of Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella make the infamous Italian red wine, Valpolicella.

Aside from Valpolicella and Soave, other wines of note from Veneto include Prosecco, Breganze and Amarone and the areas thought to produce the best wines are Treviso, Verona, Padova, Venice and Vicenza.
